New Roman Missal

On November 27, 2011, the First Sunday of Advent, Catholics throughout the English-speaking world will begin to use a new translation of the Roman Missal – the prayers we use to celebrate the Mass.

Here at St. Bartholomew, we’re doing many things to prepare for this new translation. It is our intention that this period is a time not only to learn new words but also to develop a deeper appreciation of the liturgy we celebrate. To that end, we have already begun a program of preparation, including:

  • Father Michael has preached a series of homilies about the New Roman Missal.
  • We have distributed more than 700 copies of an excellent, informative booklet, A Guide to the New Translation of the Mass. If you have not yet picked up a copy of this booklet, you may do so anytime at the Information Desk in the narthex.
  • At the end of Mass each Sunday, we are viewing a short video from a series called Lord, Teach Us to Pray. These 25 videos (2-3 minutes in length) take us on an educational journey through each part of the Mass. They help us to better understand not only the words of the new translation, but the entire liturgy. By viewing them at the end of Mass, we can educate the entire congregation. By keeping them short, we can do this in a manner that is not intrusive upon the Eucharist we celebrate each week.
  • On our website we have provided links (at right) to the resources of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops and a series of articles from our Archdiocesan newspaper, The Catholic Spirit.

In the coming months, we will be offering additional ways to prepare for the new Roman Missal, including:

  • The weekly videos will continue at Masses.
  • A series of columns in our bulletin this fall will explain the new translation and also seek to deepen our understanding of the Eucharist.
  • At a program on October 26, we will provide parishioners an opportunity to experience the prayers of the new missal, discuss that experience with one another, and ask questions.
  • The children in our school and our faith formation programs will be learning about the new translation in their classes this fall.

In addition, we are making careful plans to print the new prayer texts in our worship aid and to have other resources available in the pews to assist your full participation in the liturgy beginning November 27.
