In August we celebrate Shared Ministry Weekend. During this time we showcase a variety of ministries and ask members to look at all the new and old opportunities in the Shared Ministry Brochure.

Below you will find each ministry opportunity explained briefly where you can read of some of the ways members get involved here or in the community. You can browse the whole list or go to one of the main ministry areas that may be of interest.

Once you find an opportunity of interest, the next step is to return the sign-up form with your personal information or call the parish office at 952-473-6601 so that the Director of Shared Ministry can contact you to help you get started or help find something that is right for you. Development 

Images of Spring Dinner Auction

The purpose of the fundraiser is to meet and reunite friends who share a common vision and to raise critical funds for the continued growth and success of our parish community. The event will be held on March 5, 2011. Time commitment varies according to your job of choice, and we would love to have anyone who has an interest in this fun and rewarding ministry! 

 

Dollars for Scholars Golf Tournament

Serve on the committee that helps organize the event.  Monies raised directly serve the school scholarship fund. Event will take place spring 2011. Time commitment varies according to your job choice.
 

  

 

St. Bartholomew School

St. Bartholomew School has several daytime volunteer opportunities. Time commitment varies with many options of activities. Give an hour, stay the day or whatever works for you - we are flexible. Do you have an expertise to share? We are interested. Volunteers need not have children in the school.

 

 

Children's Faith Formation

 

Faith Formation Teacher

Teaching positions are available for first grade through fifth grade. Sessions are Wednesdays from 4:30-5:45 p.m. or 6:15-7:30 p.m. Teachers are given training, lesson plans, teacher guides and lesson supplements. Commitment is once a week, September through the first week of May. Position open to adults and youth 16 years and older.

 

Faith Formation Commission

This commission develops program policies and goals, evaluates and assesses existing programs, and assists and supports the Director or Faith Formation and Coordinator of Youth Ministry. Commitment is once a month on Tuesday evening at 6:30 p.m.

 

Liturgy of the Word for Children Assistance

Every Sunday at the 8:30 and 10:30 a.m. Masses, first through fifth graders leave at the Liturgy of the Word to hear the Gospel proclaimed. Help at a Mass to lead music (piano, guitar or voice) or assist leader with the children. Commitment is once a month. Assist during one or both Masses. Open to adults and youth 14 years and older.

 

Sunday Preschool Teacher

Teach four, five or six year-olds during the 8:30 a.m. or 10:30 a.m. Mass, October through April. Weekly lesson plans and training provided. Position open to adults and youth 16 years and older.

 

Christmas Program

Provide piano music or help direct the Sunday Preschool Christmas program. Commitment is 2-3 practices on Sunday morning during the 8:30 a.m. or 10:30 a.m. Mass.

 

 

Youth Ministry

 

Faith Formation Catechist

Facilitate a small group of 6-12 grade students.Training is provided. Commitment is Wednesday evenings, 6:15 - 7:30 p.m. (Middle School), or Sunday evenings, 6:30 - 7:45 p.m.(High School), September through April.

 
Youth Ministry Hospitality

Serve and/or provide refreshments and light meals for Youth Ministry programs. Commitment is flexible. Great way to support and encourage our youth without requiring a regular time commitment.

 
Musician for Youth Ministry

Provide music for youth events or prayer services. Singing, piano or guitar. Flexible commitment.

 
Pilgrimage Chaperone

Adults needed to help lead our summer youth pilgramages.  Various destinations and dates TBD.

 
Activity Chaperone

Chaperone a youth social, service or other type of adventure. The commitment is dependent on your availability.

 
Summer Stretch Team

Summer Stretch provides middle school students with an opportunity to be involved in community service once a week from June through the first week of August. Help plan and promote this program, act as a small group leader or help drive students to service site.

 

Adult Faith Formation

 
RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) Sponsor

Journey with a candidate as he or she prepares to become a full member of the Catholic church. RCIA sessions take place on Sundays, 9:00-10:30 a.m., October through May. Sponsors need to be a practicing Catholics and be able to attend the Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday.

 

Vocations Committee

Help nurture, affirm and call forth those in our community who may have a vocation to the priesthood or religious life.

 

 

Community Building

 
Newcomers Welcome Team

Share your enthusiasm for St. Bartholomew while serving as a host of the Newcomers Welcome. Responsibilities include assisting with program, setting up, welcoming and connecting with guests and giving church tours. Commitment is 2-3 Sunday mornings per year.

 

Shared Ministry Committee

Help plan and implement strategies for encouraging, maintaining and celebrating ministries at St. Bart's. Some of the events coordinated by the committee: Ministry Fair, Time and Talent, Volunteer Appreciation, Gifts Retreat. Commitment is 6 meetings and participating in two events per year.

 

Information Desk

Distribute parish information, answer questions and register new members. Desk is staffed 15 minutes before and after Mass. Commitment is once every 6-8 weeks at the Saturday 5:00 p.m. Mass or at the 8:30 or 10:30 a.m. Sunday Mass.

 
Website

Provide ideas and directions for enhancing the church and school website.  Commitment is flexible.

 
Communications Committee

Help organize and/or write articles for the parish bi-monthly newsletter. This committee helps decide the who, what, where, when, and why of the newsletter.

 

Phone Callers

Occasionally, St. Bartholomew makes phone calls to parishioners to extend an invitation or provide information. This ministry can be done from home and according to your time schedule. 

 

Photographer

Like to take pictures? Are you good at capturing an event on film? If yes, consider taking photos at parish functions and special liturgies. Parish camera available for use.  Commitment is varied and flexible. 

 

Event Planning

Help plan and coordinate special parish events such as receptions, dinners and parties. Commitment varies according to your choice of event. 

 

Receptionist

Staff the desk in the parish narthex once a week, Monday - Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. or 12:30 p.m.  - 4:30 p.m. Greet visitors, provide directions, distribute information, monitor visitors for school/parish, and help with light office tasks. Training is provided. Substitutes also needed.

 

 

Liturgy 

 
Liturgy Commission

Assist in planning and assessing the liturgical life of the parish. Meets once a month on Tuesdays at 6:45 p.m. 

 

Liturgical Environment Committee

Be a member of the group that plans, organizes and implements church decor for each liturgical season: Advent, Christmas, Ordinary Time, Lent, Triduum and Easter. Commitment is 5-10 hours per season. Training provided. 

 

Environment Setup/Take Down

Each liturgical season the church decor is changed. Help setup and/or take down each season. Commitment is on a per event basis. A great family ministry. 

 
Keeper of the Banner

This team helps prepare our church banners for hanging or storage.  Commitment is 6-12 times per year on Tuesday mornings.

 
Eucharistic Minister

Distribute the Body or Blood of Christ at Mass. Each minister is scheduled for one month, each calendar quarter. Training provided; all you need is is an appreciation of the beauty and dignity of the Eucharist. Open to members 16 years and older who have received the sacrament of Confirmation. 

 

Lector

Clear speaking voice required for the reading of the Word of God during the weekend liturgies. Commitment is 8 - 10 times per year. Training provided. Open to adults and youth 7th grade or older. 

 

Altar Server

Assist Fr. Michael/presider during Mass. A great way to be involved and learn more about the Mass. Open to adults and children 4th grade or older. Training provided. Commitment is once every 4 - 5 weeks. 

 

Greeter

This ministry is committed to providing a friendly and welcoming environment. Responsibilities include greeting, distributing the worship aids as congregation arrives and the bulletin when they depart. Commitment is for one month, four times per year. This is an ideal ministry for families. 

 

Coffee and Donuts

Make coffee, arrange donuts on trays, serve the refreshments and clean-up. Commitment is one weekend Mass every two months. A great family ministry! 

 

Nursery

Assist with the care of our young children during Sunday Mass. Commitment is for one month, three times a year. Open to volunteers age 16 years through adult. 

 

Video Camera Operator

Operate the video camera during major liturgical celebrations, e.g. Christmas, Easter, etc. The video camera is used to project the service into the overflow room. Commitment is one or more events depending on your schedule. 

 

Usher

The ministry is dedicated to providing a friendly and welcoming environment. Responsibilities include greeting and seating parishioners, assisting with the Sunday collection, and helping visitors. Commitment is for one month, four times per year.

 

 

Music

 

Cantor

Lead assembly in singing at the weekend liturgies.  Rehearsals are flexible.

 

Choir Member

Lead assembly in singing at 8:30 and/or10:30 a.m. Sunday Masses. Commitment is September through May; also sing for major feast days. Open to 9th grade students through adults. Rehearsal is 1 1/2 - 2 hours on Wednesday evenings.

 

Children's Choir

Rehearsals are Tuesdays from 4:15 p.m.- 5:30 p.m. Sing twice a month during one weekend Mass. Open to grades 3-6.

 

 

Pastoral Ministry

 
PREPARE Couple

As a married couple, meet with engaged couples using the Prepare inventory as a guide to prepare them for their marriage. Comprehensive training provided. Two year commitment, working with 1-3 couples a year (approximately 6 hours per couple).

 
Marriage and Family Enrichment Co-Coordinator

Help organize and facilitate an educative seminar for the support of marriage and enrichment of family. Commitment is 2-3 planning meetings and once a week evening seminar for 6 weeks.

 
Parish Visitor

Visit parishioners who are hospitalized or homebound and help them stay connected to the parish during the times they're unable to come to Mass. Bringing the Eucharist to the homebound is especially appreciated. Visits may vary but are usually 2-4 hourly visits a month. Training provided.

 
Simon Society

Occasionally parishioners face an unusually disruptive crisis or emergency situation. Be a member of a team that is prepared to assist with basic necessities such as bringing meals and supplies. This ministry is infre-quent, but when needed it draws from the kindness and generosity of many members.

 
Communion Service Prayer Leaders

Lead residents in prayer and distribute communion at a nursing home or one of several assisted living facilities in the area. Commitment is one morning a month (day and hour varies depending on facility) for approximately one hour. Training is provided.

 
Assist Golden LivingCenter Residents to Mass

Help residents participate in Mass or a communion service by escorting them from their room to the chapel. Commitment is one Wednesday a month from 10:25-11:25 a.m.

 
Music Ministry

If you like to sing or play an instrument, join us on Wednesdays as we sing hymns of praise at the weekly communion service at Golden LivingCenter. Commitment is from 10:40-11:30 a.m. Singing "in-tune" not required, just bring your joyful heart.

 
Pray the Rosary

Lead residents in praying the rosary at local assisted living facilities. Commitment is for one hour in the morning once a month (day and hour varies depending on facility).

 
Funeral Sacristan

Assist with preparation before and after Mass. Some duties include preparing the altar, arranging the funeral vessels, lighting the incense, and helping out during Mass as needed. Training will be provided. Commitment is approximately 2 hours per funeral (most funerals take place on a weekday).

 
Funeral Altar Server

An altar server assists the priest during a Funeral Mass. Responsibilities include carrying the processional cross, holding and placing the Rites books as the priest needs them, assisting with the rituals and vessels during the Liturgy of the Eucharist. Training provided. Time commitment is approximately 1-1/2 hours, usually on a weekday.

 
Funeral Eucharistic Minister

Participate in the beauty and dignity of the Eucharist by distributing the body or blood of Christ to the Funeral Mass assembly. Training provided. Time commitment is about one hour, usually on a weekday.

 
Funeral Usher

Represent our caring community by your compassionate and welcoming presence by greeting visitors attending a Funeral Mass. Duties include distributing worship aids, helping to find seating, answering visitors questions. Time commitment is 1-1/2 hours, usually on weekdays.

 
Funeral Lector

Proclaim the Word of God at a Funeral Mass. Training provided. Commitment is about one hour, usually on weekdays.

 
Funeral Lunch Server

Hospitality is provided following most Funeral Masses and help is needed to set the tables, serve the food, pour the coffee and clean up after. The time commitment is about 4 hours during the day and you may be called up to 12 times a year. This could be a good opportunity for stay-at-home parents to help at St Bart's while their children are in school.

 
Prayer Network

Join other St Bart's members who are committed and called to pray for the needs of others. Members receive a prayer request by phone or email and then pass that prayer request on to the next person in their group. Time commitment is one year.

 
 

 

Justice and Service

 
Justice and Service Commission

Increase the parish's awareness and involvement in justice issues through social action, service and education. Commitment is the 4th Thursday evening per month as well as participation in various events and projects. Training provided.

 

Adopt-An-Orphanage

This event provides parishioners with an opportunity to honor loved ones by selecting a day of the year in which their contribution feeds the children of “Love-A-Child” orphanage in Haiti. Volunteers are needed to decorate the booth or work at it during St. Bart's “Fair Trade Sale, a Global Bazaar” on November 20 & 21, 2010.

 

English As a Second Language

Teach English as a second language at our sister parish, Holy Rosary Church in South Minneapolis. Days or evening classes available. Training provided.

 

Feed My Starving Children

Help package a low-cost meal for malnourished children around the world. Parishioners five years and older can participate. Commitment is 9:00-11:00 a.m., Saturday, December 11, 2010 or April 2, 2011. A great way to involve children in service.

Families Moving Forward

 

This organization helps homeless families stay together while they seek permanent housing. Churches around the Twin Cities take turns hosting 3-4 families for a week at their building. In Wayzata, St. Bartholomew partners with Wayzata Community Church to provide shelter during various weeks of the year. Volunteers can serve as a shelter host, plan and serve a meal, work with the children or serve as an overnight host. Commitment is 5:00 p.m.- 8:30 p.m. on a Sunday: Sept. 19 or 26, or December 12 or 19, 2010.  Overnight hosts or breakfast cooks are also needed. Families welcome to serve.

 

Fair Trade Sale, a Global Bazaar

The Fair Trade Sale takes place at St. Bart’s on November 20 & 21, 2010 and provides an opportunity for parishioners to kick off their holiday shopping by purchasing Fair Trade goods, delicious baked goods and homemade fudge. The sale of these goods help struggling artisans from around the world earn a fair wage to support their families. Volunteer needs: serve on planning committee, or set up/take down, inventory, cashier, floor sales, etc. 

 

Adopt-A-Family

Interfaith Outreach and Community Partners matches a needy family with a family or an individual who is willing to provide gifts and a meal at Christmas. Let us know if you are interested, and we will contact you in October.

 

Respect Life Committee

The mission of the Respect Life Committee is to help promote a culture of life. The main focus of the committee is assisting those who are most vulnerable, especially mothers and their unborn children. Some of the activities sponsored by the committee include supporting crisis pregnancy centers, providing resources on relevant issues, coordinating the annual Respect Life Sunday and leading the monthly Rosary for Life. Meetings are held the first Thursday of every month from 6:30 - 8 p.m.

 

Green Team

Help to promote environmental stewardship (a key principle of Catholic social teaching) by organizing events and resources that foster respect and care for God's creation. This team is also responsible for researching and implementing strategies for recycling and reducing waste, as well as enhancing energy efficiency in our parish buildings. Commitment is one evening meeting on the second Thursday of the month plus special events.

 

IOCP Sleep Out Candlelight Procession

Help IOCP meet their goal of raising awareness and funds for local housing needs. Volunteers are needed to place flyers in the pews or to be part of the kick-off procession as candlebearers, torchbearers or banner holders. Event takes place on Saturday, November 13, 2010, after the 5:00 p.m. Mass. This is a family-friendly service opportunity.

School's Cool

Provides school uniforms, fees and supplies for children at the Banyan Community who attend the Catholic schools: Risen Christ Elementary (our sister parish’s school) or DeLaSalle High School. Volunteers needed to serve in one or more of the following ways: shop for students’ supplies, load and deliver items to Banyan, solicit sponsors and donors, help with Distribution Night at the Banyan, write thank-you notes to donors. Commitment varies according to task and takes place between May through September.

 
 

Backpacks for Banyan

Provides backpacks and school supplies for the public school children of the Banyan Community (providing educational support for low income children in south Minneapolis). Volunteers needed to help organize backpack drive and/or load and deliver backpacks to the Banyan in July and August.

 

Simpson Housing Meal Server
Be a part of the St. Bartholomew team that prepares and serves dinner for 100 guests at the overnight men’s emergency shelter in Minneapolis. The team develops recipes, shops for groceries, and then prepares freshly made meals to very appreciative guests. This opportunity occurs in the evening from 5:30 – 9:30 p.m. (provides 3-4 service hours for Confirmation candidates). Commitment is one evening, dates to be determined. Open to anyone 12 years old through adult.
 

 

 

Holy Rosary Coat Drive

Assist with the coat drive in October. Help is needed in the areas of publicity and/or delivery of coats to Holy Rosary.
