NEWS

As Father John announced, St. Bart's will host a drive for donations of non-perishable food and household items for St. Stephen - Holy Rosary Church this weekend (January 31/February 1). Due to immigration enforcement efforts in the metropolitan area of Minneapolis, parishioners are afraid to go to work, shop for groceries, and attend Mass.

Products Needed:

  • Food/Groceries - non-perishable (e.g., rice, pinto and black beans, canned and dry goods, tuna fish, flour, sugar, vegetable oil, salt, and basic spices)

  • Fresh fruit that can be handled easily (e.g., oranges and apples)

  • Baby formula, diapers, wipes, and baby care products

  • Feminine hygiene products

  • Hygiene Products: body wash, shampoo/conditioner, toothpaste, deodorant, etc.

  • Cleaning Products: dish soap, toilet paper, paper towels, kitchen/bathroom cleaner, laundry detergent, etc.

Bulk items that can easily be re-allocated for single families or individuals are welcome (e.g., canned goods, toilet paper, bread and diapers), but we have been asked to avoid large bulk bags of products (rice, fresh vegetables and dry goods) that require additional steps to re-package.

Drop off times at St. Bart's will be Saturday, January 31 between Noon and 2:00 p.m. and after the 5:00 p.m. Mass, and Sunday, February 1 after Masses and between Noon and 2:00 p.m. Volunteers will be available to

accept donations and deliver them directly to Saint Stephen - Holy Rosary Church.

ABOUT OUR SISTER PARISH

St. Bartholomew and St. Stephen's and Holy Rosary Churches, in the Phillips neighborhood of South Minneapolis, established a partnership in 1997. The partnership was founded on the principals of creating community, respecting distinct cultures, and fostering justice in the larger community.

St. Stephen-Holy Rosary is a merged urban mission parish with two campuses, serving a predominantly Latino immigrant community. Both St. Stephen and Holy Rosary shared a long history of active, vibrant ministries and service to the poor prior to merging in 2022. St. Stephen was established in 1885, the 9th Catholic parish in Minneapolis. The current brown sandstone church was dedicated in 1891. A school followed in 1915, which was staffed by the Sisters of St. Joseph until 1991. Holy Rosary was established in 1878 by the Dominican Friars of the Province of St. Albert the Great. The current church and priory were built in 1888. In 1879, Holy Rosary School was established. The Sinsinawa Dominican sisters served at the school and later the parish until 2015. In 2020, the Dominican Friars made the decision to leave the parish, and Holy Rosary merged with St. Stephen in 2022. The schools at both campuses were consolidated into Risen Christ School in 1993.
